Back at the hotel, sitting on a secret, private balcony accessed through a maid’s closet, Rhonda and I faced one another.

“I think of Katherine dying, unable to see how Angela, Reggie, and the kids are all doing. I don’t want that to happen to me,” said Rhonda. She clapped a hand to her chest. “I can feel my heart stop just thinking of it.”

“It’s important that you think positively about this,” I said with feeling. “Dr. Perkins was upbeat; you need to be too.”

“Dr. Perkins is used to the whole idea. I’m not,” said Rhonda. “I need to schedule an appointment with my lawyer to review my will. If I die, I need to protect my children, and as agreed, I’ll give you my shares of the hotel. Oh, Gawd! Who’ll you pick for a partner?”

“I refuse to think of that now, Rhonda. If the time comes when it’s necessary, we’ll do it together. Right now, I’m concentrating on positive thoughts and a prayer or two.” Once Rhonda had a thought in her head, it was hard to erase it, and I didn’t want her to go into a tailspin over this.

“Okay, that’s fair, but this is making me think of all the things I should’ve done to update my will as things changed.” She sipped her margarita and stared out at the Gulf waters. “I’ve been very lucky. Maybe more than I deserve, but I swear I’ll leave this world a better place than I found it.”

I placed a hand on her arm. “You already have, Rhonda. You have been a very generous donor to many charities, not just one.”

“I want you to handle my funeral, Annie,” said Rhonda, her eyes filling with fresh tears.

“Rhonda, look at me,” I said sternly. “We are going to get through this. Together. We’re not talking about dying and funerals.”

“I guess you’re right. But I still want you to handle my funeral when the time comes,” said Rhonda. “And now, no matter what, Will and I are taking the vacation we talked about.”

“That’s more like it. Think of the fun you’ll have together.”

“Yeah, we might never get a chance to do it again,” said Rhonda, her eyes filling once more. “Oh, Gawd! How am I going to tell Will I might be dying.”

I rolled my eyes. It was going to be a long two weeks before Rhonda’s surgery. I wondered what it would take to move that appointment up. Rhonda had already agreed to fill any cancellations on Dr. Perkins’ schedule, but it wasn’t likely to happen.
